CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY The history of mosquito control and the importance of the mosquitoes are directly related to the health, comfort and economy of humans and their use of the environment. Public supports for control programmes are based on the will of the public to be protected from mosquitoes. Where humans settle they develop and use natural resources, they change the environment and this may have both good and harmful effects. For example Owerri Municipal have had its environment modified in one way or the other due to human activities, that is the activities engaged in practice by the inhabitant of this environment. There is an intimate ecological relationship between humans and mosquitoes. By inadequate management of land and water resources with failure to solve the problems of liquid waste management, large more productive habitats for mosquitoes continue to grow and to cause disease and intolerable annoyance. Mosquito species uses natural and artificial habitats as source of water for oviposition and breeding site are numerous in parts of Owerri Municipal due to varied human activities, poor economic conditions, low literacy level, poor sanitation level and indiscriminate disposal of discarded household materials.
